Abstract

This article provides an analysis of some socio-political realias of Great Britain in the aspect of the theory of cultural literacy developed by E. D. Hirsch. An analogy is drawn between this theory and the understanding of the term "linguistic and cultural studies" in the most popular studies in this field. The concept of "background knowledge" is analyzed in detail, the structure of this phenomenon is determined and its influence on public discourse is revealed. A semantic analysis of the realias associated with the socio-political life of Great Britain is also carried out. The article proposes a classification of the realias under consideration with examples from linguistic dictionaries and the modern press.
