Abstract

The article is dedicated to the analysis of the naming of rainbow as a referent and different meanings of one and the same etymon in Indo-European languages. The discrepancy of meaning and designation is observed from the pragmatic point of view. We identified zoomorphic and anthropomorphic names, whose etymology is impossible to study without folklore, history of religion and ethnography analysis. Zoomorphic names present the archaic view of rainbow. Anthropomorphic names are the words which are of Greek and Latin origin.
