Abstract

In this review epigenetic changes in the oxytocin gene and the oxytocin receptor gene, an association with reproduction in humans, and the potential consequences of any changes and mutations in the gene for mother and child in the short and long term were disscused. It has been proven that methylation of the oxytocin receptor gene can affect the course of labor. There is strong evidence about effects of oxytocin on social behavior and anti-stress effects in both the mother and the newborn. But still, the effect of changes in the oxytocin receptor gene and its expression on the contractile function of the myometrium remains unexplored.
