Abstract

Since oxygen is more electronegative and electron repulsive than hydrogen, the O atom will take all the electrons away from the H atom. This allows the oxygen portion of the water molecule to be partially negatively charged and the hydrogen portion partially positively charged. Water is classified as a polar molecule because of its polar covalent bonds and angular shape. If there are more water molecules than solute molecules, a hydration shell of water molecules forms around the solute particles in an aqueous solution.
