Abstract

The article examines the internal form of somatic phraseological units of the Japanese language with the component “me” (eye), based on the association ‘eye - gaze’. Analysis of somatic phraseological units with the element “me” (eye) shows that the semantics of these phrases gives an idea of the most important archetype of Japanese linguistic consciousness: the eye is not only the ‘organ of vision’, but also what is especially important, the ‘container of life’. At the same time, the semantics of motivated somatic phraseological units with this component can be determined by the direct meaning of somatism “me” (eye), i.e. ‘organ of vision’, and its interpretation of ‘receptacle of life’. Following this, the motivation for the semantics of the phrases under consideration is determined by a double correlation with reality. On the one hand, they are correlated with the situation of visual perception. On the other, they are associated with a person, which ensures the duality of the meanings they express.
