Nano-Hybrid Smart Coatings for Biomedical Applications
Abstract
Nano-hybrid smart coatings that self-repair and adapt properties in response to environmental changes show promise as next-generation corrosion protection solutions. This chapter reviews developments in the field, discussing fundamentals, early research exploring self-healing and stimuli-responsive functions using nanoparticles, and the evolution of complex nano-hybrid formulations. Key properties like enhanced barrier properties and multiple self-healing mechanisms achieved by different systems are analyzed, along with responsiveness to stimuli and performance evaluation techniques. Promising applications in automotive, aerospace, oil/gas and ship industries are explored. Remaining challenges in dispersion during scale-up and potential of integrated sensor technologies are also identified. The chapter concludes by suggesting future research directions to advance modeling, characterization and commercialization of these coatings. In summary, nano-hybrid smart coatings demonstrate potential to revolutionize corrosion protection through high performance and built-in self-care functions tailored for industrial use.
