Abstract

Summary River embankments need proper characterization and monitoring of their geotechnical and hydraulic properties to assess their state of health. This need has become more critical in recent decades due to the increase of extreme rain events induced by climate change. Geophysical techniques can provide a fast set of tools to map the state of health of embankments. The present paper report on the combined acquisition of resistivity and seismic data along a 300 m portion of the Verolengo embankment of the Po River, near Torino, Italy. Acquisition and interpretation data strategies are presented together with the results obtained through data clustering and petrophysical formulations. Comparison of these last with available geotechnical information confirmed the potentiality of the adopted approach for the screening of embankment properties.
