Abstract

This research is dedicated to exploring the concept of information sources, their historical development, and their role in the evolution of mass media. The study examines the classification, structure, and types of information sources, while highlighting their influence on journalistic practices across different historical periods and regions. A thorough analysis of academic literature by both foreign and Uzbek scholars was conducted, and various theoretical approaches to understanding information sources were examined through comparative analysis. One of the key conclusions of the research is that information sources have undergone distinct stages of historical development. The study investigates early providers of information, including individuals and objects, and analyses how the information revolution led to the emergence of new tools and mediums. These changes are explored through examples from different countries and time periods, shedding light on global and regional variations in the ways information has been transmitted. The research pays special attention to media-related information sources, examining how sociopolitical factors have influenced the selection and accessibility of such sources. It is emphasized that the methods used by media professionals to obtain and disseminate information have varied significantly depending on the time period and geographical location. Additionally, various definitions of the term “information source” proposed by both international and local scholars are presented. The classification of information sources is revisited using modern approaches, and their structure is analysed in line with the requirements of contemporary mass media. The study concludes that the types of information sources are not absolute; rather, they continue to evolve in response to societal needs and technological advancements, reflecting the dynamic and ever-changing nature of the media environment.
