Abstract

A new species of an unusual stromatoporoid genus Stylostroma Gorsky, 1938, S. absurdum sp. nov., is described from the Middle Famennian (Devonian) of the South Tatar arch of the Volga–Ural oil and gas bearing province. The study of the host sediments revealed an increased content of organic carbon, suggesting that they are equivalents of petroleum source rocks.
