Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder associated with insufficient insulin secretion or resistance to its effects, characterized by elevated blood glucose levels. It not only disrupts glucose metabolism but also negatively affects the cardiovascular system, kidneys, eyes, nervous system, and immune system. Due to its chronic nature, the disease leads to numerous serious complications, including diabetic nephropathy, retinopathy, neuropathy, cardiovascular diseases, and gangrene of the extremities. These complications significantly reduce patients’ quality of life and increase the risk of premature death. Modern diagnostic methods and treatment approaches aim to detect diabetes early, control blood glucose levels, and slow the progression of complications. At the same time, preventive measures such as a healthy lifestyle, diet, and physical activity play a crucial role in preventing the disease and mitigating its consequences. This article analyzes the main types of diabetes, risk factors, diagnostic and treatment approaches, as well as complications and measures to prevent them.
