Abstract

The article examines bilingualism and multilingualism as socially determined phenomena shaped by the sociocultural environment. Based on the analysis of data from three regions with different language regimes (Uzbekistan, Quebec, Singapore), it is shown that the intensity and type of bilingualism/multilingualism directly depend on language policy, migration processes, the education system, and the status of languages in society.
