Cultural reflections in language:investigating idioms and set expressions in English

ABI

Abstract

Abstract: This article investigates the role of phraseological units—particularly idioms and fixed expressions—and cultural mirrors within the English language. Through descriptive and analytical methods, the study classifies idioms into thematic groups related to work, social behavior, nature, and animal imagery. The findings reveal that English idioms highlight values such as individualism, practicality, optimism, and self-discipline, confirming that phraseological units act as mirrors that reflect the culture of their users. Understanding these expressions enhances intercultural competence and deepens learners’ appreciation of the linguistic richness of English.
