Abstract

Social media has transformed digital communication by enabling global, instant connectivity. However, this accessibility has introduced significant privacy and security risks. The exposure of personal data, coupled with data breaches, cyberattacks, misinformation, and identity theft, has made users increasingly vulnerable. As social media platforms act as central digital controllers, sustainable ecosystems must integrate strong security and privacy measures. This chapter evaluates core privacy and security concerns, highlighting major risks and vulnerabilities. It explores threats such as data mining, tracking, and inter-organizational data sharing. Solutions include blockchain-based authentication, AI-driven malware detection, and privacy-enhancing technologies (PETs). Emphasizing ethical practices and digital literacy, the chapter blends expert views and regulatory frameworks to improve trust. The findings guide policymakers and educators in building safer, resilient digital platforms that support sustainable digital transformation.
