Immersive Language Learning
Abstract
This chapter examines the transformative potential of Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) in immersive language learning. By enabling experiential, context-rich, and culturally embedded interactions, AR/VR redefine traditional pedagogy and foster greater engagement, retention, and communicative competence. Grounded in experiential learning and situated cognition, these technologies support diverse learning styles and personalized pathways. Despite challenges in cost, accessibility, and teacher readiness, emerging innovations such as mobile-based VR, browser-native platforms, and AI-driven tutors are expanding access. The chapter envisions a future where immersive tools democratize language education, making it more inclusive, global, and learner-centered.
