COLLECTIVISM AND INDIVIDUALISM IN ENGLISH AND UZBEK PAREMIAS

WORLD OF PHILOLOGYjournal2026

Abstract

This article investigates the pragmatic expression of collectivist and individualist values in English and Uzbek paremias. Employing a contrastive pragmatic framework, the study analyzes how paremias function as indirect speech acts to encode social norms and evaluative attitudes. The results indicate that Uzbek paremias primarily promote collectivist principles such as social cohesion, moral obligation, and respect for hierarchy, while English paremias predominantly emphasize individual autonomy, self-reliance, and personal responsibility. These findings underscore the significance of paremias as culturally embedded pragmatic resources in discourse.
