Abstract

A simulation study of a solar-transversely pumped Cr:Nd:YAG laser with Monte Carlo photontracing technique was conducted. The model was used to calculate the pump efficiency, pumpand temperature distributions, and estimate the laser crystal damage limit based on thermalstress distribution data. The laser crystal dimensions were optimized to achieve maximumconversion efficiency. These results were used to evaluate the laser efficiency and outputpower. The results show that the solar-to-laser power conversion efficiency can reach 4.5%,while the slope efficiency reaches 6.25%. This represents the highest efficiency achieved withsolar side-pumping of various active media in experiments conducted to date.
