CUI Testing Comparison of ASTM G189 and TM 21549 on Mineral Wool with Corrosion Inhibitors
Abstract
Abstract Like all industries, the insulation industry faces challenges that force change. One of the biggest influencers of change in recent years is corrosion under insulation (CUI). Mineral wool insulation, being one of the earliest insulation material types, has seen its fair share of challenges. The latest innovation in mineral wool has been the addition of corrosion inhibitors to counteract CUI, which occurs primarily on pipelines. Along with the changing landscape of CUI, CUI testing has also evolved over the years. This paper investigates CUI testing developed in the 2000s vs CUI testing developed in the 2020s, specifically comparing the differences between ASTM G1892 and TM 215493. Testing of mineral wool insulation and other types of insulation to these two standards will be reviewed and discussed.
