Abstract

The plot centers on the unrequited, sublime feelings of the modest official Zheltkov for the married princess Vera Sheina. For many years he secretly writes letters to her, and on her name day he decides to give her a gift - a family heirloom, a gold bracelet withстатусом. This gesture becomes fatal: the clash of the “little man” with the world of aristocracy reveals the gulf between true self-sacrifice and social propriety. Kuprin asks: does that "love that happens once in a thousand years" really exist? The piercing finale, accompanied by the sounds of Beethoven's sonata, leaves the reader with a sense of touching something sacred and tragic. This is a story about love that is stronger than death, and about the importance of not passing by someone else's heart.
