Abstract

In translation, equivalence can be achieved at different levels of linguistic units. The most commonly used of these is the word, but asymmetric equivalence can occur due to semantic, grammatical and morphological differences between the languages involved in the translation process. This article discusses such asymmetric equivalence. The author classifies translation problems that occur in the translation of lexemes, word combinations and phraseological units in English and Uzbek, and suggests ways to overcome these problems by comparing them with examples.
