Abstract

This article examines the importance of student autonomy in the preparation of future English language teachers. In modern higher education, autonomous learning is considered one of the essential components of professional teacher development. The study analyzes theoretical approaches to learner autonomy, the role of independent learning in teacher education, and the impact of autonomy on pedagogical competence, motivation, reflective practice, and lifelong learning skills. The article is based on the works of internationally recognized scholars in language education and educational psychology. Research findings indicate that autonomous students demonstrate stronger critical thinking abilities, improved language proficiency, higher self-efficacy, and greater professional readiness for teaching careers. The study also discusses the significance of learner-centered approaches, digital learning environments, reflective journals, collaborative learning, and self-assessment techniques in fostering autonomy among future English teachers.
