Abstract

The maxillary sinus (sinus maxillaris) is the largest of the paranasal sinuses and represents a major shock-absorbing cavity of the midfacial region. Integrity of this anatomical structure is frequently compromised following traumatic injuries to the bones of the middle third of the face. In this literature review, an English-language search was conducted using the PubMed database to evaluate epidemiological characteristics of midfacial trauma and pathological changes involving the maxillary sinus. The review presents and discusses current findings regarding the nature of maxillary sinus lesions associated with fractures of the zygomatico-orbital complex.
