Transforming sedentary behavior through sports tourism: Impact on physical activity and exercise enjoyment
Abstract
Background and purpose This study aimed to evaluate the impact of Sports Tourism Program (STP) on physical activity and exercise enjoyment among sedentary people. Materials and Methods A 12-week pretest-post-test experimental design was adopted. The sample consisted of 48 sedentary people from Sukabumi City. Physical activity and exercise enjoyment were measured at both pretest and post-test phases. Results The analysis revealed a significant increase from pretest to post-test with the most substantial increase was observed in moderate physical activity (F = 341.78; p = 0.001; η²p = 0.93). Regarding the group factor, a significantly greater effect was found for moderate physical activity (F = 6.883; p = 0.014; η²p = 0.23). Furthermore, a significant interaction effect was observed for moderate physical activity (F = 9.241; p = 0.004; η²p = 0.23). Similarly, exercise enjoyment showed a significant increase from pretest to posttest (F = 284.86; p < 0.001; η²p = 0.92), a significant main effect for the group factor (F = 8.41; p = 0.008; η²p = 0.26) and a significant interaction effect (F = 52.18; p < 0.001; η²p = 0.69). Post-hoc pairwise comparisons confirmed that the STP group achieved a higher increase in both physical activity and exercise enjoyment compared to the control group (CG). Conclusion The STP intervention is more effective than CG in enhancing physical activity and exercise enjoyment among sedentary people.
