Opportunities and Challenges for Leadership AI in Strategic Decision-Making
Abstract
Artificial intelligence is fundamentally reshaping strategic decision-making in higher education, compelling institutional leaders to cultivate new governance capacities and adaptive leadership frameworks suited to an era of algorithmic influence. As universities face mounting pressures — from demographic shifts and funding volatility to intensifying competition and demands for equity — AI-augmented analytics and predictive modelling offer powerful tools for navigating institutional complexity with greater precision and foresight. This chapter examines how human-AI collaboration can meaningfully strengthen institutional strategy while simultaneously generating distinct ethical, cultural, and organisational tensions that leaders must thoughtfully address. Drawing on a synthesis of current scholarship across educational leadership, data science, and technology ethics, the authors develop an integrative framework that links data intelligence, ethical governance, and phased AI implementation into a coherent strategic architecture.
