On Cosmic Ray Diffusion and Anisotropy

ABI

Abstract

We investigate the effects of a turbulent magnetic field on the ‘leaky box’ model of galactic cosmic ray confinement, finding that within the galactic disk cosmic rays diffuse in three dimensions with a mean free path of about 30 pc. If cosmic rays are produced by supernovae, then we observe at Earth rays from about 2000 separate sources. The local value of their anisotropy is determined by conditions local to those magnetic field lines which pass near the Sun.
