Abstract

Gossypium L. is a genus that has received considerable scientific attention over the years because of its agricultural importance as the source of the world's cotton crop, combined with its botanical interest as a highly diverse genus of global distribution. The present paper intends to evaluate this newer information and incorporate it into an integrated and updated account of the systematics of the genus. It also proposes to bring into a single account the "normal" apparatus of systematic studies, including keys, descriptions, synonymy typification, and other nomenclatural information.
