Abstract
In this paper a variational principle which supplies a general approach to the study of the equilibrium configurations of relativistic, rotating stars is formulated and proved. It is also sho n that the relativistic variational principle passes over directly, in the non-relativistic limit, into the well- Newtonian variational principle for rotating fluids. Some applications are discussed in the concluding section
