Abstract

The magnetic properties and cation distribution of a new ferrimagnetic R-type hexagonal ferrite have been studied from isothermal magnetization and Mössbauer spectroscopy measurements. The compound BaFe4Mn2O11 possess a collinear spin structure and a strong uniaxial magnetic anistropy. By means of the law of approach to saturation and the singular point detection technique magnetic anisotropy field up to 50 kOe is obtained at T = 4.2 K. It is shown that Mn ions have a full preference for the octahedral 6g sublattice and crystallochemical reasons for this fact are given.
