Abstract

Abstract This paper discusses recent examples of the progress made in our understanding of some of the basic physical mechanisms involved in the production of thermoluminescence in a selection of common TLD materials. Special emphasis is given to a discussion of the defects responsible for thermoluminescence in LiF, CaF2 and SiO2. The paper demonstrates how a variety of experimental techniques need to be brought to bear on these problems and points out the limitations of our present understanding.
