Abstract

Much of the progress in physics has arisen from the study of linear partial differential equations, and attempts are normally made to 'linearise the problem'. However certain problems, such as the motion of waves in shallow water, have solutions that are intrinsically those of a nonlinear equation, the so-called 'solitons'.
