Positron annihilation

Abstract

When a positron enters a solid, it very quickly undergoes an annihilation reaction with its antiparticle, the electron, releasing in the process the total energy of the two particles. This energy, almost entirely made up of the rest mass energy 2m0c2, equals 1.022 MeV and appears as γ rays.
