Abstract
Indicators for the required ecological monitoring of the degradation of zonal vegetation formations have been identified for the northern Aral Sea region during the evaluation of desertification processes. The mapping is focused on the identification of the degree and trends of change and the role of dominant plants in ecosystems. A definition of the functional significance of vegetation is given.
