Abstract

Carlisle et al. (4) reported that the insect hormone, ecdysone, mimicked the effects of the plant hormone GA. in a dwarf pea seedling bioassay. Although the report dealt with experiments using crude locust extract of unknown hormonal composition and strength, it has received wide acceptance in the literature (2, 5, 8, 9, 12). Thus, other investigators have assumed that the locust extracts contained a gibberellin-like substance (2, 5, 8, 9, 12), although no evidence for the existence of such a sub- stance in locust extracts was presented (4). Reviewers have further interpreted this report of Carlisle et al. (
