Abstract

Near-crossing of the lowest energy levels of Tb3+ in high magnetic fields causes the step-like change in the magnetisation curve of TbGG. Crystal-field theory predicts the near-crossing at 95, 200 and 275 kOe in the magnetic field applied along cubic directions (110), (100) and (111) respectively. Magnetisation curves measured along the (110) direction in DC fields up to 150 kOe in the helium temperature range are reproduced within a few per cent by the theory.
