Abstract

Abstract The 15 crystal field parameters of a C s ‐symmetry Hamiltonian are determined for the Dy 3+ ion in DyAlO 3 by fitting the temperature dependences of susceptibility along the three crystal axes, Stark splittings, and the g‐tensor to the values observed. Metamagnetic transitions are investigated for various directions of the field in the ab plane between T = 1.52 and T N = 3.52 K. The metamagnetic behavior of DyAlO 3 is in accordance with the character of the Dy 3+ ground state, determined by our crystal field data.
