Abstract
On the basis of a re-examination of the stratigraphy and materials uncovered by the original Japanese excavations of Tall-i Mushki in south-west Iran during the 1950s and 1960s, this paper provides new and more precise radiocarbon dates for the Mushki cultural levels at this mound. Further, it compares them with those of the Bashi and Jari period occupations at the nearby site of Tall-i Jari B. It is argued that the occupation at Tall-i Mushki dates to the last few centuries of the seventh millennium BC, the period immediately before the Jari phase. The chronological proximity of these two phases demands that the background for the rapid cultural change from the Mushki to Jari phases is explored.
