Abstract

SYNOPSIS The literature on the physiological role of manganese in trees is reviewed. Manganese (Mn) deficiency is associated with strongly-podzolised soils and good drainage. Deficiency symptoms and foliar nutrient trace element levels are given for the Southern Cape. Future research should concentrate on soil tests: monitoring of foliar levels in second-rotation stands and the evaluation of enzymatic physiological assay techniques.
