Abstract

Ion shadowing and blocking measurements show that the solid-liquid transition at the (110) surface of lead starts at approximately 40 K below the bulk melting point of lead ${T}_{m}$. The thickness of the liquid surface film increases dramatically as the temperature approaches ${T}_{m}$.
