A theory of inelastic collisions of atoms with multiply charged ions

Abstract

A simple method is proposed for estimating cross sections for excitation and ionization in collision of atoms with fast multiply charged ions in cases in which the Born approximation is inapplicable. This method is analogous to the approximation of sudden excitations and allows direct generalization to collisions that lead to simultaneous excitation and ionization of two or more electrons. Ionization of a hydrogen atom and double ionization of a helium atom have been considered. Comparison with experiments is given.
