Abstract

In contradiction to the results of de Haas and van den Berg, the complete exclusion of thermal radiation has not been found to increase the transfer rate beyond the normal value. It was observed, however, that contamination of the transfer surface with condensed gases will cause a greatly increased film flow. The effect of impurities on the transfer has been studied in detail and the conclusion has been reached that the high and variable transfer values recently reported by some observers are to be ascribed to this cause. The bearing of the effect on cryogenic technique is discussed.
