Abstract

Ultrasonic measurements are presented which show extensive thermal hysteresis in the elastic moduli of polycrystalline YBa2Cu3O7-x in its normal state. Recovery and annealing effects are reported. These results are consistent with the hysteresis being caused by twin boundary movements induced during cooling and warming. Attention is drawn to the disappearance of the hysteresis in the superconducting state.
