Abstract

This thesis examines the interdependent relationship between language learning and cultural understanding within the field of applied linguistics. It explores how language functions as a carrier of culture and how cultural knowledge influences communicative competence. Drawing on sociolinguistic and intercultural communication theories, the study highlights the importance of integrating cultural instruction into language teaching. The paper discusses key concepts such as intercultural communicative competence, pragmatic awareness, and cultural identity, and analyzes their implications for classroom practice. Additionally, it considers the role of teachers and instructional materials in fostering cultural understanding among language learners. By synthesizing theoretical insights and pedagogical approaches, the thesis demonstrates that language learning without cultural understanding remains incomplete and limited in communicative effectiveness.
