Abstract

Distance education has become an essential component of modern educational systems due to rapid advancements in information and communication technologies. The expansion of online platforms and digital tools has enabled learning to take place beyond traditional classroom settings, offering greater flexibility and accessibility to learners worldwide. This article examines the opportunities and challenges of distance education by reviewing relevant academic literature and analyzing the changing nature of teaching and learning in virtual environments. Key opportunities include increased access to education, flexible learning schedules, and support for lifelong learning, while major challenges involve limited interaction, technological barriers, and concerns related to learning quality and student motivation. In addition to the theoretical discussion, the article presents the results of a small-scale survey conducted among students to explore their preferences between distance learning and traditional classroom education. The findings reveal that although distance education offers significant advantages, many students still favor face-to-face learning due to direct interaction and structured learning environments. The article concludes by emphasizing the need for balanced and well-designed distance education models to maximize benefits while addressing existing challenges.
