Abstract

When teaching foreign languages, the competency-based approach (CBA) places a strong emphasis on quantifiable results and the real-world application of language proficiency. This article examines particular elements that improve oral skill development (speaking and interactive communication) under CBA. Task authenticity, learner-centered activities (role-plays, simulations, group discussions), criterion-referenced assessment, integration of competencies (linguistic, sociolinguistic, pragmatic, and strategic), and lowering psychological barriers through motivation and autonomy are important characteristics. These characteristics result in increased fluency, correctness, confidence, and communication competence, according to theoretical analysis and a review of instructional methods. By switching from traditional drills to meaningful engagement, the method improves oral skills development and makes it more in line with the expectations of contemporary education.
