Abstract

Four experiments were conducted at the Institut Laue Langevin (ILL) to investigate the shape coexistence phenomenon in the Ca nuclei. A thermal neutron beam supplied by the ILL reactor was used to populate 42,43,44,45 Ca isotopes by neutron-capture reactions. The FIPPS array, deployed in two different configurations, was used to detect gamma rays. This article discusses preliminary results on 44 Ca, and the search for shape coexistence in this isotope. In the present experiment, the decay scheme of 44 Ca has been substantially expanded with 20 new levels and 280 new γ-ray transitions.
