Damage Caused by Bark and Timber Beetles. The immense damage to forest, shade and fruit tree caused Ly Bark and Timber Beetles' belonging to the Scolytida' family, to- gether with the importance of the timber and fruit interests of West Virginia has made it seem necessary that we should study the hab- its of the different species found, and the extent and character of the damage caused by them. While only a portion of my time has been devoted to this study, sufficient evidence lias l)een obtained to convince me that tlie destructive powers of these minute and appar- ently insignificant beetles are fur greater than is generally supposed. ferent kinds of Pine over an area of ten thousand square miles in Wes^t Virginia, Virginia and Maryland. Our magnificent Black Spruce forests, covering an area of over five hundred thousand acrcp, |is again threatened, and if not checked will prove destructive .to large. areas of tiniber.
