It is suggested that the usual antiferromagnetic model be modified somewhat for the study of metamagnetic transitions in crystals with small exchange fields to consider states in which the magnetization of one of the magnetic sublattices is less than the nominal one. A new phase, the collinear ferrimagnetism phase, turns out to be possible in the modified model. The magnetization and magnetic susceptibility of the crystal are found for this phase. An attempt is made to explain the metamagnetic transitions in siderite that were experimentally observed previously as transitions into the ferrimagnetic phase.
