Atomic dynamics of small xenon crystals
Аннотация
The paper reports an electron-diffraction investigation of the effect of the size of xenon islet film blocks on the mean-square atomic displacements. The observations were made in temperature range from 5 to 50 °K with an ÉMR-100 scanning unit at an accelerating voltage of 50 kV. The crystallite size was varied from 40 to 250 Å. The electron-diffraction investigation revealed a significant increase in the mean-square displacements in small particles. The indicated effect depended essentially on the particle size and the sample temperature, increasing as the latter was raised. A comparison of the experimental and theoretical results not only allowed the estimation of the increased role of the surface, but also revealed a considerable weakening of the interatomic interaction in small crystals of the inert gas.
