Аннотация
The effect of the rf field of a direct fast magnetosonic wave on the stability of a plasma column with a longitudinal current in a strong magnetic field is analyzed in the MHD theory. It is shown on the basis of the resulting dispersion relation, which is nonlinear in the amplitude of the rf field, that in the low-frequency, long-wavelength limit kink modes are destabilized far from the magnetosonic resonance of an rf field of this type. Near a resonance, where stimulated Brillouin scattering is important, the results of a treatment which is linear in the perturbations indicate that kink instabilities are suppressed.
