The numerical solution of the Eliashberg equations is used to demonstrate that a universal blurring mechanism of gap singularities existing in the density of states N(ω) of anisotropic conductors in the limit of large electron-phonon interaction constants λ > 3–4 is effective even at a temperature T → 0. For this reason, the observation of sharp BCS-like singularities in N(ω) of cuprates makes it impossible to explain high-temperature superconductivity by using the Eliashberg theory with λ ⩾ 3.
