Dryland Agriculture in Northeastern Europe and Northwestern Asia
Аннотация
This chapter utilizes the statement that dryland farming is an agriculture dependent on rain and snow in regions with low rainfall. Temperatures gradually increase moving from the east of northwestern Asia (NWA) region westwards and to the northeastern Europe region. The region of the NWA is characterized by short warm period and long cold winters. Central Chernozem area has the most favorable soil conditions for dryland agriculture. The system of soil tillage in crop rotations consists of combination of moldboard plow and stubble mulch tillage. Conserving soil fertility is the main challenge of any cropping system. Soil tillage is an important component of soil conservation system in Volga area. Conservation tillage is by and large economical in the steppes of northern Kazakhstan and western Siberia, because it increases grain yield due to better water accumulation during winter by standing stubble.
